[Working through grief] is no small task, and it may take many months.

In Mrs. Brown’s case, it might be that her problem is related to the fact that she did not have the usual growing-up experiences that most people have at the age of eighteen or twenty. Her present difficult experience is a delayed reaction. Now at the age of thirty-two she has to face leaving home and family and losing her husband, all at once.

The easiest solution would seem to be that Mr. Brown quit his job and go back to Iowa and live as they did before. But then Mrs. Brown’s guilt would be compounded, for she would feel guilty of keeping her husband from a promising future. And now that he has had a taste of business success, we cannot imagine he would be happy in his former job. No, these people came to the crossroads and made a decision that forever changed their lives.

They cannot turn back and take up where they left off because they are no longer the same two people. They will never really be able to face the new kinds of problems that life presents until they have seriously thought through and reconstructed their basic philosophy of life.

Although Mr. and Mrs. Brown might never think of their problem as being at the core a philosophical and religious one, in essence that is what it is. Every man and every woman, in order to live a rich and meaningful life, must take a turn at being a philosopher, to search for meaning in living. This move to Chicago has forced both Mr. and Mrs. Brown to rethink what they consider to be worth striving for.

The Christian faith offers a stimulating context in which to do this rethinking. It is the desire of every good pastor to encourage people like Mr. and Mrs. Brown to discuss in depth such life-shaping beliefs, in order that their faith may develop a maturity commensurate with their chronological age.
